Aircon on Cherished / Sports / Imported Cars
On older vehicles and some import cars air-conditioning systems used refrigerant called R12. The problem with this was that it had Ozone Depleting Properties (ODP) and also Global Warming Potential (GWP). As a result of the Montreal Protocol, its production was banned in the year 2000. Its replacement, R134a was not suitable as a drop in replacement, as it reacted with the mineral oil and attacked the oil seals and rubber hoses. However a new refrigerant was developed called RS24, This is a “drop-in” replacement on above vehicles
RS24 refrigerant is more expensive than R134a (approx 80% more).
The fill quantities, are also greater than modern air conditioning units.
The procedure is exactly the same, apart from the access fittings being different.
Oxygen Free Nitrogen is used to pressure check the system for leaks
Mineral oil is added along with the RS24.
