The most important thing to remember is to use your Air Conditioning on a regular basis. If the air con is not used for long periods there is a possibility that the shaft seal on the Compressor will adhere itself to the shaft damaging the seal and the loss of Refrigerant Gas, resulting in a replacement new/reconditioned compressor plus a re-gas (a bill of several hundreds of pounds). Still not convinced ? Consult you vehicle handbook.
Winter In the winter the air con can be used as a de humidifier this will greatly assist in the de misting of your windows. Simply push the air con button and let the moisture in the car condense on the cold surface of the radiator built into the dash (we call it an evaporator) and yes you can leave your heating on warm/hot.
Summer If your Air con is struggling to cope with getting you cool try putting the the controls to re-circulation. This will keep re cooling the air in the car thus shutting off the entry of warm air coming into the car. If it does not make any difference this could indicate the air con is not working and requires investigation.
General Don’t assume that because the light comes on when the air con button is pressed that the air con is working there are several pressure switches that will prevent the compressor from turning if it is low on refrigerant gas, this is to prevent the compressor turning No Gas = no lubrication of the compressor and we wouldn’t want that would we !!
